Starring Shin DongYup, Hong SeokCheon, and EXID’s HaNi as hosts, the show delves deep into the real stories of 3 queer couples with various struggles and aims to highlight the perseverance and inner strength of these individuals on their journey of coming out to the world and living on their own terms. With Hong SeokCheon’s lived experiences, Shin DongYup’s gentle and kind exposition, and HaNi representing the voice of the youth, “Merry Queer” is an incredible first step towards queer visibility and representation in mainstream media. Here’s everything you need to know about the couples of “Merry Queer”!
1. Kim MinJun (@jjuunnee_e) & Park BoSung (@park_bosung)
Kim MinJun and Park BoSung are a gay couple who have been dating for 590 days. They’re an affectionate and overwhelmingly sweet couple that just can’t get enough of each other. Their story explores issues of coming out to family and friends, facing ostracisation from peers, and, alternatively, being accepted. The show follows them during a significant turn in their lives as they apply to register their marriage legally in South Korea. As it turns out, at the time of filming, it had only been a month since applications for the registration of same-sex marriages had started to be accepted. Luckily, MinJun and BoSung’s application is accepted, but it seems that further processing might be delayed. You can follow MinJun and BoSung’s life on their YouTube channel “뽀송한 준_bosungjun”.
2. Yu JiHae (@u__jihae) & Lee MinJu (@ooxmin)
Yu JiHae is a female-to-male (FTM) transgender man in a relationship with Lee MinJu, a bisexual woman. They have been dating for two years. Yu JiHae is in the process of preparing for gender affirming surgery. Their relationship is wholesome, harmonious, and based on mutual respect and unconditional love. Yu JiHae’s story opens up a discourse about gender dysphoria and the challenges trans individuals have to face, including microaggressions in public places, restrooms, and more. It is lovely to see just how supportive MinJu is of JiHae’s decisions and how strongly she validates his feelings. You can watch more of their life on their YouTube channel, “노네임 No-name”.
3. Im GaRam (@zzito_v) & Lee SeungEun (@atozzzi)
Im GaRam and Lee SeungEun are a lesbian couple who are planning their wedding. GaRam is a 26-year-old university student/business owner, and Lee SeungEun is preparing to be a pilates instructor. They’re deeply in love, and it shows. In GaRam and SeungEun’s story, we see them struggle with finding a wedding planner, especially in the face of blatant rejection, simply due to the fact that they’re a lesbian couple. GaRam and SeungEun share their concerns about facing this wall with their friends, who in turn reveal their own experiences. They also talk about the fact that their parents won’t be there at the wedding because they have not accepted their relationship. However, they’re as excited as can be and are ready for their big day. You can keep up with GaRam and SeungEun on their YouTube channel, “토돌이네Todol’s”.
